Why is it we have a distorted view of Persian history? What has gotten in the way of our seeing Persia as it was? What kinds of things, specifically, do we see a distorted image of in Persia during the Greco-Roman times?

The most simple and straight answer is that we see Persian history through the eyes of the Greeks, Romans, and Hebrew historians, all of whom were enemies of the Persians. It is like it would be to read US history through the writings of Japanese, Russian, and Salvadoran historians.

Charles R is right (and a thumb up for him), but he has probably forgotten to say that most of the Persian historical documents were also destroyed by the invading Arab Muslims in the 7th century AD. So, today we only have what others have said about Persia.
